WHO WAS ERNEST W. BURKEEN, JR.?

Ernest W. Burkeen, Jr. always believed in young people’s promise and the power of the next generation to make the world a better place.

Throughout his extensive career in Parks and Recreation, Ernest W. Burkeen, Jr. has inspired countless students and young professionals. From Southeastern Michigan and Detroit to Fort Lauderdale, from Miami to Baltimore, and various points in between, many of today’s Parks and Recreation professionals cite Ernest’s belief in their potential – and his patience with their growing pains as professionals – as the foundation on which their professional success was built.

Affectionately known as “Big Dog,” Ernest was a past president and dedicated supporter of NRPEMS. In 2020, the NRPEMS Board of Directors voted to rename the mentorship program in honor of Ernest.
